The One Thing We All Need in 2021
2020 certainly wasn’t what any of us anticipated. It was unexpected and unprecedented. We struggled in ways we could have scarcely imagined. We fought hard battles. We laughed. We cried. We loved. We lost. And many of us are showing the scars. These scars bear witness to the journey we’ve walked … the journey we’re still walking.
But tonight the calendar turns. We’ll peel off 2020 and don the fresh cloak of 2021 with all its anticipated promise of a fresh beginning and a new start. It feels cautiously optimistic.
And yet, the reality is that no one knows what this year holds. If 2020 taught us anything, it taught us that. But 2020 also taught us that although we may not know what the future holds, we know who holds the future. Jesus wasn’t surprised by 2020. He knew it all … and He’s been here alongside us, walking through the peaks and the valleys. He’ll be with us in this next year too … through the success and the failures and the hopes and the utter disappointments. He knows the plans He has for us, plans to prosper us and not harm us, plans to give us a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). And He promises never to leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6).
So as we begin to enter this next year with our sadness and our soul-battered weariness or our cautious optimism and our subtle hope, there’s only one thing we really need … there’s only one bit of knowledge we need to carry us into 2021 … Jesus is near.
Whatever we feel, however we doubt, no matter our struggles, it doesn’t change the fact that He is here … the Alpha and Omega, the Lion of Judah, the Prince of Peace … He is here, fully incarnate and present in this beautiful, battered world. He carries us through it, and He will carry us into all that 2021 holds with an unwavering peace that passes understanding. He is all that we need fir the new year. Let’s rest in that, friends! Happy New Year’s Eve.
