Motherhood and the Great Commission
I’ve been thinking a lot about the Great Commission lately, thinking about how it intersects with my everyday motherhood. And I recently realized that when Jesus said, go and make disciples, he didn’t say where. He didn’t specify a city or a country or a continent. He just said, go. Do you know where many of those people who were listening to Jesus would have gone after hearing his message? They would have gone home. Jesus knew this. And while his commission to go and make disciples absolutely refers to going to the ends of the earth, it also refers to going to the ends of your home. Because if disciple-making is going to happen outside our home, if it’s going to reach to the ends of the earth, it should begin with the people in our home.
Mama friends, motherhood doesn’t keep us out of the great commission; it puts the great commission right in front of us. As a mom to young kids, it’s easy to feel like ministry is something that only happens outside our own walls, in the vast landscape of communities near and far, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Life-changing ministry happens right here, in the tending and the teaching, the caregiving and the correcting of these little souls the Lord has entrusted us with.

Don’t take this lightly. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you are missing out on ministry or sitting on the sidelines of the great commission. If God has given you children, through birth or adoption or guardianship or any other means, you are entrusted with disciple making, and it is no small thing to be entrusted with.
