The One Thing Your Children Need to See You Do This Holy Week
Dear mama … maybe you’re trying to do all the things this week. Maybe you’re trying to make the menus and remember Good Friday and hide the eggs and have the conversations about the cross, the grave, the empty tomb and the grace poured out in overwhelming abundance. And maybe … just maybe in your attempts to celebrate Holy Week you’re realizing it feels anything but holy. If you were honest it feels more like hustle week.
Am I the only one who feels this way, or can you relate? If we were sitting across the table from one another, would you say you feel it too? I think perhaps you might. Because despite our attempts to slow down and savor the sanctity of this week, there is so much to do. We long to impart the importance of these days to our children, so we strive to fill our time from Palm Sunday to Easter with impactful moments.
But maybe in the striving and the planning, we’ve missed something. Maybe there’s something better than the meals and the services and the prepping. Maybe rather than see us doing all the things, our children simply need to see us sitting at Jesus’ feet.
Because if we show them what it means to sit with Christ, to treasure his word, to long for His presence, then we have shown them the true meaning of Easter. The cross gives us the undeserved gift of grace and asks nothing in return. There is no working for salvation, no trying hard to earn it, no striving for eternity. There is instead the simple act of receiving the gift of grace and the worship that arises from the depths of a grateful, rescued heart.
Sweet friend … our kids don’t need perfectly dyed eggs and matching Easter attire. For if we get so caught up in striving to make Easter perfect, then we’ve missed the spirit of Easter. Our kids simply need to see us sit with Jesus. So let some of the busyness fall away; take an activity off your calendar; shorten that to-do list.
And simply sit with the Lord.
