In the End Only Two Things will Matter
I attended the homegoing of a friend the other day, a friend who battled cancer and ultimately beat it when she walked into glory and into the presence of Jesus. And as I sat in that service and looked around at everyone she’d touched, at the sanctuary full of hundreds of people whose lives are richer because she knew Jesus and they knew her, it hit me … in the end, the only things that will matter are how we loved Jesus and how we loved others.
Our relationship with Jesus and our relationships with others are the only things we will get to carry from this life into the next. They are eternal when everything else is temporal.
Sitting in that sanctuary, that truth was evident. My friend, Alexis, loved Jesus because he first loved us, then she let that love spill over in abundance to everyone around her. We are changed because of it, and eternity will look different because one woman lived a life of daily, sacrificial faith.
Alexis knew Jesus as the source of resurrecting life. She knew him as her cleft in the rock. She knew his faithfulness as her shield and rampart. She knew him in plenty and she knew him in want. She knew him on the mountain and she knew him in the valley. And in the end, she knew him in the pain and the suffering. It was his covering that carried her through and then ultimately carried her onto her final triumph.
You and I get one life—one precious life—and we get to choose how to live it. If you already know and trust Jesus, press in to know him more and then be a conduit of his grace to others. If you don’t yet know him, take some time to investigate him. Josh McDowell’s Evidence that Demands a Verdict and Lee Strobel’s The Case for Christ are great places to start.
Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened. Because ultimately In the end, only two things will matter: how we loved Jesus, and we you loved others.
