Position Over Performance

I find such joy in watching my children do what they love. It literally makes my heart leap to see my kids act upon their talents, to use their gifts, to enjoy their various interests. And no matter the outcome … whether they win or lose or succeed or fail, it doesn’t change the joy I receive from simply watching them express their giftings.

Other people, however, don’t receive the same joy I do. Other spectators may get swept up in the moment or feel their heart surge in a victory, but they don’t share the same joy I do when they watch MY kid. Because my joy isn’t dependent on my child’s PERFORMANCE. Rather my joy is complete because of my child’s POSITION.

They’re my kid. I’m their mom. And that relationship makes all the difference.

I imagine it is somewhat similar with our Heavenly Father and us. If we, as human parents, find such joy in watching our own children do what they love … then how much more joy does it bring our Heavenly Father to watch us express the talents He’s given us?

Whatever YOUR thing is … your music, your writing, your dance, your art, your agility, your mental acuity … what if it’s simply your expression of it that brings HIM divine joy? Not because of your performance, but because of your position.

You are His kid. He is your Father.

So next time you’re tempted to shy away from your talents or hide your gifts for fear of loss or failure, remember:

It’s not your performance that matters. It’s your position.
