Into the Mountains and Week 6 of the Reading Group

Garden of the Gods | photo and design by Faith and Composition

Just a few days ago, my family and I returned from a week-long trip to Colorado. Though I will be sharing more about our adventures in a later post, I must say that the beauty was breathtaking. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen this post in which I shared some of my thoughts on the mountains and the praise they evoke. I’ve traveled to Colorado several times before, but for some reason, being surrounded by the majestic grandeur of God’s immense creation last week moved me to tears.

Because nature has a way of doing that, doesn’t it? It takes us outside ourselves, opens our eyes to the bigger picture, reveals the unfathomable greatness of the God who created it all. And to think that He calls us by name! What an incredible God we serve!

I need a little time to process my emotions and compose my thoughts, but I look forward to sharing more about the trip with you shortly. I hope you’ll check back in soon! Until then, today starts week 6 in our F&C reading group. And don’t forget, you still have time to enter the Good-Enough Mom giveaway! Click here to enter. Good luck!

A Reading Group with Faith and Composition | Week Six, Grace for the Good Girl
If you’ve just discovered F&C, it’s never too late to join! We’re currently reading through Emily Freeman’s Grace for the Good Girl, and I’d love to have you join us! You can get all the details right here, then feel free to take it at your own pace. You can use this group as an opportunity to dig deeper into the book on your own, or use these questions to host your own small-group study. (Click through to catch up on week 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.)

Now let’s dive in!

WELCOME TO WEEK 6

This week’s reading covers part 3, chapter 15 and chapter 16. As you read, consider the following questions for reflection, or use these as as a source of discussion for a larger group study.

Do you possess any fears or insecurities that stem from you feeling the need to be a “good girl”?

How do these fears or insecurities cloud your vision and prevent you from seeing God’s hand at work in your life?

Has there been a time in your life when Jesus brought you to the edge of self-sufficiency and urged you to fall down and surrender all to Him? What were the circumstances surrounding that experience? What is the fruit that comes from this surrender?

Are you afraid of failure? Why? Does your fear stem from feelings of needing to be good and needing to live up to certain standards?

When you fail, do you ever feel that you are beyond the reach of God?

Read Romans 3:21-24 and Romans 5:6-8. What do these verses say about our own failures in light of God’s grace?

Peter failed Jesus immediately prior to his crucifixion. He denied him not once, not twice, but three times. The rooster crowed, their eyes met, and Peter knew he had failed. After Jesus is crucified, Peter goes back to fishing. But Jesus has other plans for Peter in spite of his failures. Read John 21:15-17. How does Jesus redeem Peter’s failure?

I hope you’ll dialogue with us via BookShout! this week as you reflect on these questions. I hope to see you there!

Encouraging women to anchor in Christ, nurture grace-filled families, foster lifegiving homes

It’s still one of my favorite memories, and the older I get, the more I realize what a true gift it is to simply have everyone beneath one roof.

Don’t looks away. Don’t silence the headlines. Don Don’t looks away. Don’t silence the headlines. Don’t close your ears to the anguished cries of people created in the image of God.

Now more than ever, bring these people before the throne of God. Get on your knees and pray with fervor for the people of the Middle East. For their protections. For their freedoms. For their wholeness. For their salvation and their sanctification.

Pray that the darkness would be banished and the light would dawn. Pray that the Gospel of Jesus Christ would go forth. That it would take root in hearts across the region and bear fruit. Pray that chains would drop, that slaves would be set free, that captives would be liberated. Pray that the goodness and the grace of Christ would saturate the hearts of people who are living in darkness.

And do not tell me that prayers don’t work. Because ultimately the struggle in the Middle East is not against flesh and blood. It’s against “the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”. (Ephesians 6:12) And the only way to fight a battle against the spiritual forces of evil is to get on our knees and fight it with the tools of spiritual warfare.

For the one who feels like you don’t measure up … For the one who feels like you don’t measure up … at home, at school, at life, at work. Consider these three things, then set your mind on Christ.

1️⃣ Where am I finding my worth?

It’s easy to define our worth by the world’s standards … success, wealth, influence, intelligence. But these standards will always leave us empty because they rely on WHAT we are, not WHO we are. When we allow our worth to be defined by who we are as a child of God and a daughter of the king, it radically changes our understanding of our value.

2️⃣ What voices am I allowing to speak into my life?

Are we constantly listening to voices of the world? Or are we seeking the truths of scripture and the life-giving affirmations of other believers?

3️⃣ Am I cultivating a heart of gratitude?

It’s tempting to feel like we don’t measure up when we fail to cultivate gratitude for what we do have and for the intricate ways God has gifted us. When you start to feel the threat of comparison or inadequacies seeping in, combat it by thanking God for all he has so graciously gifted you!
